LSL is a 3-year program starting with chemistry, then biology, then physics.
Why physics third?
Because physics is simultaneously the study of the very smallest and the very largest things in our cosmos, so chemistry and biology serve as the familiar middle ground from which to branch out. Physics is also math-heavy, so by year 3 students have had sufficient time to develop the necessary skills.
LSL 3’s physics is the capstone crowning the work done in LSL 1 (chemistry) and LSL 2 (biology). Fundamental elements laid the previous two years like dimensional analysis and a familiarity with units and dynamic equilibrium make more nuanced physics concepts smoother to acquire.
In LSL 3, we cover the following science topics:
- brief review of chemistry and biology
- cosmology
- astronomy
- earth science
- base units (kg, m, s)
- kinematics (velocity, acceleration, displacement)
- vector diagrams
- equations of motion
- dynamics (momentum, forces, etc.)
- energy (kinetic, gravitational potential, etc.)
- free body diagrams
- waves
- Standard Model of Particle Physics
- quantum chromodynamics
Meanwhile, these are the language topics we cover:
- vocabulary
- conjugation
- morphemes
- diagramming
- word webs
- types of poems
- rhyme and meter
- scansion
- timed prose prompts
- literary devices
- timed poetry prompts
- aphorisms
In LSL 3, we bring all the language skills we’ve cultivated over the last two years together to bear: everything more sophisticated and infused with more subtlety and beauty. We apply everything we’ve developed in LSL 1 and LSL 2 to write poetry and prose, respond to timed prompts, and express ourselves. It’s rewarding to watch students find their voice.
To succeed in LSL 3 a student must:
- have completed LSL 2
- do their classwork and homework thoroughly every week
- check and correct their homework every week in class
- have a good work ethic
- have a positive attitude
