Lion Science & Language

LSL is a 3-year program starting with chemistry, then biology, then physics.

Why biology second?

Because the chemistry in LSL 1 allows us to explore and understand the cell, the foundation of all life, at a much deeper level. Our chemistry knowledge also helps us understand physiology, nutrition, and other biological phenomena with significantly sharper precision.

The biology builds on our chemistry foundations, then cells become tissue, organs, organ systems, organisms, and ecosystems all interacting together on our planet. Then this macrocosmic perspective, derived from the atom, sets the stage for the beginning of physics in LSL 3 – classical mechanics.

In LSL 2, we cover the following science topics:

  • brief chemistry review
  • organelles
  • diffusion and equilibrium
  • prokaryotes and eukaryotes
  • organic macromolecules
  • nutrition
  • field studies
  • mitosis
  • germ theory
  • neurotransmitters
  • genetics
  • DNA transcription and translation
  • meiosis
  • Punnett squares
  • natural selection
  • evolution
  • form and function
  • intra and interspecies interactions
  • binomial nomenclature
  • cladograms
  • ecology

As long as the student has thoroughly completed and turned in all their LSL 1 coursework, they have everything they need to be successful with LSL 2’s science material. LSL 2 cannot be taken before LSL 1.

Meanwhile, these are the language topics we cover:

  • parts of speech
  • diagramming sentences
  • conjugation
  • poetry
  • timed writing prompts
  • prefixes and suffixes
  • word webs

We expand upon the fundamentals established in LSL 1 – we diagram more sophisticated sentences, become more modular with our vocabulary, and now add writing to timed prompts more frequently. This is where we really start using the material we’ve frontloaded.

To succeed in LSL 2 a student must:

  • have completed LSL 1
  • do their classwork and homework thoroughly every week
  • check and correct their homework every week in class
  • have a good work ethic
  • have a positive attitude
