LSL is a 3-year program starting with chemistry, then biology, then physics.
Why chemistry first?
Because it’s the pivot between the visible and the invisible. It’s small enough to help explain the really small stuff (like light being photons), and big enough to explain many of the natural phenomena we observe every day (like the sun and the clouds). Our work in chemistry also helps us explore biology more deeply in year 2 and establishes strong fundamentals for physics later in year 3.
In LSL 1, we cover the following science topics:
- the spectrum of matter
- body systems overview
- cell theory
- earth science overview
- astronomy overview
- the atom
- Bohr models
- Lewis Dot diagrams
- bonding and molecules
- electronegativity and polarity
- nomenclature
- molecular geometry
- dimensional analysis
- balancing equations
- states of matter
- solutions chemistry
As long as the student knows their multiplication tables soundly (multiplying and dividing fractions is even better), they’re well-equipped to succeed with the science material. We take students from 0 to 100, no steps skipped, no gaps in logic.
Meanwhile, these are the language topics we cover:
- morphemes
- parts of speech
- vocabulary
- diagramming sentences
- conjugation
Our work in language develops our reading comprehension, our grammar, and our flexibility with words. The modular vocabulary also fills the mind with words to use in self-expression, like the timed writing prompts (5 sentences, 50 words, in 5 minutes) that come in year 2. And the morphemes we learn help us break polysyllabic science words into their smallest pieces. This empowers students to unlock the beautiful ideas contained in big scary words, and makes topics like nomenclature in chemistry much more accessible.
To succeed in LSL 1 a student must:
- have solid math (multiplication) and reading fundamentals (≥6th grade)
- do their classwork and homework thoroughly every week
- check and correct their homework every week in class
- have a good work ethic
- have a positive attitude
